Project Summary:

This UROP aims to investigate rhythm as a tool for theatrical storytelling. Through various performance modalities (clown, neutral mask, tap dance, and text) rhythm will be manipulated as a way to generate narrative structure and emotional meaning in theatrical performance. This will be done through a combination of a subjective experience and objective study. The goal is to explore the relationship between the intrinsically personal element of acting and a more technical, less biased method. The project will culminate in a 45 minute devised solo piece that will be performed publicly followed by a talkback to encourage active thought and conversation about the use of rhythm as a theatrical storytelling tool.
